Classes and Workshops

Arrowhead Gallery and Studios is pleased to offer ongoing classes in Pottery and Ceramics, as well as one and two-day project-focused workshops in Drawing, Painting, Glass, Basketry, and other mediums. Our well-appointed multi-purpose classroom is adjacent to our Clay and Glass studios. Please click on the button at the bottom of any of our current classes and workshops below, to be taken to a downloadable .pdf with all the details.

To register for Classes and Workshops, come by or call Arrowhead Gallery and Studios at 78C Catawba Street in Old Fort NC, or call and register over the phone at (828) 668-1100. Registration for classes and workshops is not available on this website at this time. 

Our Policies:

Participants must be at least 16 years of age; younger students are welcome, but must be accompanied by a parent, who also must register for the class or workshop. Kids Clay classes are an exception.

If the minimum number of students signing up for a workshop is not met, the instructor has the choice of holding the workshop or cancelling. If cancelled, the workshop fee can be refunded or may be applied towards another workshop. Arrowhead Gallery and Studios follows the McDowell County School system for weather-related closures and cancellations.

  • Kids’ Art Class

    First Sunday of each Month
    2 to 4 pm
    Ages 5-12

    We invite you to bring your kids by the Gallery for an afternoon of art and fun! Gallery artists will be working with them to create beautiful art around a new theme each month. A variety of art activities will be available to meet the age and artistic level of participants. All supplies will be provided and best of all, the class is FREE! The class will be limited to 15 participants. Registration closes one week before class starts.

  • Children's Clay Class

    with Mathilda Potter

    Wednesdays 3:30 – 5
    A3L members $150/month, non-members $175/month.
    All supplies and firings included.
    Max of 4 children, ages 8 to 12.

    Come join in with other children and have fun creating with clay!! Learn various hand building techniques and create your own functional pieces such as bowls or vases as well as sculptural masterpieces with the guidance of instructor, Mathilda Potter. Class size limited for lots of 1 on 1 attention!

    A former New York City school teacher, Mathilda is also trained in Special Education. Mathilda is not only an accomplished potter but also an encouraging and enthusiastic instructor!

  • Tuesday Morning Classes

    First two Tuesdays , 9:30 to 11:30

    Beginners and up. All mediums and subjects.

    $35 for two classes for A3L members $45 for non members.

    Lorelle Bacon is known for her patience and giving lots of one on one attention to her students. In these classes, students may bring whatever medium supplies they choose and work on their own project at their own pace. Beginners to more advanced are welcome.

    Lorelle teaches most mediums, including oils, acrylics, watercolor, pastels, colored pencils, pen and ink, drawing, scratchboard and wire wrapping! She is known for her patience and loves teaching beginners, so come join other creatives and take your art to the next level!

  • Clay Class

    with Mathilda Potter

    Wednesdays 11 to 1

    $130 A3L members, $150 nonmembers for four classes

    We use a punch card system and you may take up to 2 months to use your four classes, to fit a busy life!

    Come play with clay and learn to make fun, fired, and permanent pottery and clay sculptures. All levels, beginners to advanced, Welcome!

    Supplies and firing are included. Open studio practice hours are also included, and available Wednesdays 10 to 1, Fridays 10 to 3:30, Saturdays 10 to 3:30, and Sundays 1 to 3:30.

    Private classes (two hours) are available at $75 for one person, and up to 3 more persons for $25 each.

  • The Power In Painting Still Life

    Saturday May 25th, 10 to 4
    $125 A3L members, $135 nonmembers, plus $20 supply fee

    In this workshop we will be getting up close and personal with your subject. You will paint three small pieces in this all day workshop.

    One will have a focus on values, another on use of complimentary colors and a third will have the focus on glazing.

    We will focus on realism and details. If you enjoy "being in control", then this is the workshop for you!

    You will learn how to know what to leave out and what to include from your reference photos.

    We will be painting with Acrylics for the fast drying time, but what is learned may be applied to any medium. You will also learn the magic of glazing!

    Bring a lunch, notepad and a willing spirit and enjoy the day with other creative people!

  • Sphere Pottery

    Part 1: Tuesday, June 4th, 2 to 5
    Part 2: Thursday, June 6th, 2 to 5
    Part 3 (glazing): Tuesday, June 18th, 2 to 5

    $180 A3L members, $190 non-members, plus $8 for clay; studio time and instruction. tools, balloons, and storage will be provided. Students may use their favorite personal glazes or for $11 I will provide Amaco glazes.

    Minimum 3 students, maximum 8

    From bowls to vases, masks to jars, balloons offer an infinite array of hand building opportunities.

    The first balloon workshop will focus on the technique of draping 3/8 inch slabs of clay over balloons to create bowls or lanterns of different sizes.

    Interested individuals should have intermediate pottery skills: hand building with coils and slabs, scoring and slipping.

  • Scratchboard Magic!

  • Stained Glass Geometric Pendant

  • Stained Glass Saucer Flower

    This unique project consists of pre-cut glass petals and a crystal coaster. If you have a color preference for petals, make sure you designate that when you sign up.

    This project is suitable for indoor or out.

    Students will clean, foil, flux, and solder their flower. Students will have the option of adding decorative wire or glass beads as well. All supplies are included. All glass is pre-cut and this is a perfect beginner class.

  • Art For Well-Being

  • Stained Glass Iris Suncatcher

    This simple yet striking vision of our blue ridge mountains is a permanent overlook!

    Glass is precut. Students will clean, foil, flux, and solder their round.

    Students will learn to add a lead border and any hardware to hang. All supplies are included.

  • Stained Glass Pretty Lily

    Stained glass lily suncatcher, be sure to note preferred colors. Students will have all the supplies needed, precut glass, hardware, and beads - ready to hang! Students will clean foil, flux and solder all pieces and learn how to apply hardware.

  • Market Basket!

    Come make a beautiful blue tote to bring home goodies from the farmers market, or to bring a towel and a book to the pool.

    This useful basket is 10 1/2 inches tall with a 6 by 13 inch base that flairs out at the top.

    We will have a 30 minute lunch break.

  • Glass and Wire for the Garden

    Two wire and glass bead planter/garden stakes AND a pot gripper - all three in one workshop!

    Here is a unique twist on wire wrapping. Students will select from different color beads and use wire to construct 3 unique art pieces to add to your garden. One garden stake, one twisted plant stake and one pot gripper. All supplies included!

  • Garden Angel

    Thursday, June 20th, 1 to 4
    $45 A3L members, $55nonmembers, plus $15 material fee includes glass, prepared glass components, hanger, garden stake and firing

    In this workshop we will be using a variety of glass and glass elements to create a “Garden Angel” to watch over your flowers and shrubs as they grow throughout the season.

    Our base will be created with a pattern and then you will be able to let your creativity go wild as you design your angel. There will be some glass cutting involved and we will review directions on cutting glass and practice glass will be available. Glass enamels will also be available to add additional decoration to your design.

    Our “Angel” will measure 4 inches x 10 inches and hang on a stake that will go into the ground.

    She will be a great addition to your garden.

  • Deer Friend Peeper

    Our 2nd in the series of window peepers: deer. Precut adorable deer can be hung or set in a wooden stand (available in class for purchase) in your window. Students will clean, foil, solder and attach hardware. Suitable for all levels.

  • Stained Glass Flowering Cactus

    Precut flowering cactus plant is a nice addition to our succulents. Learn new techniques of decorative soldering and 3-D assembly with this project. There will be a variety of pots to choose from or bring your own. We will be soldering “picks” to the bottom so they can be added to any display or stand alone.

  • Stained Glass – Three Fishes

    You will choose from multiple colors and make three hanging fish to hang together or share.

    Students will clean, foil, flux, solder and add hardware and wire work to enhance your creation.

    Fish will be hung on fish hooks to complete the look!

    This workshop is for beginners through intermediate level art students.

    Take your artwork to the next level!

    The techniques you will learn in this workshop can be used with both oils or acrylics.

    Students will complete 2 paintings to take home and frame or give as gifts. One will be a landscape and the other will be a still life piece.

    Lorelle has taught hundreds of students through the years and is known for her patience. She will walk you through the process step by step. Bring a sack lunch for a 30 minute lunch break.

  • Stained Glass Luna Moth

  • Posie Plate

    Thursday, July 18th, 1 to 4
    $45 A3L members, $55 nonmembers, plus $15 supply fee

    In this workshop we will be creating an 8-inch plate of flowers. Using a stack technique, we will be designing a plate of colorful flowers.

    This class is for beginners and intermediates.

    We will be using nippers to shape our flowers so there will be limited glass cutting. If you have some fusing experience this will be a new technique to learn. This plate will be an eye-catching piece of glasswork that can be displayed as a decorative plate or hung on the wall. It is a fun project. Come and join us.

    Minimum of 3 students, maximum of 6 students

  • Let It Flow

    Alcohol Ink Scarves/wearable art

    Tuesday, July 23rd, 1:30 to 4

    Ability level - beginners and beyond
    Minimum 3 Maximum 8

    Participants will have the opportunity to wrap themselves in one soft silk bandana and one 6’ scarf designed with alcohol inks. Each person may choose to make a tie-dye like design or use a paint brush to create a picture. (Gloves and masks will need to be worn for this project).

    Lori Greenberg is the founder of Aurora Studio & Gallery, an arts nonprofit for creatives who have lived experience with mental health needs or substance use. She has worked with various fiber creations since her youth and currently has her scarves for sale at various galleries around Western North Carolina.
